Calgary Stampeders rookie quarterback Jake Maier will start at quarterback in the Labour Day Classic against the Edmonton Elks.

Even though Bo Levi Mitchell came off the six-game injured list this week and took part in multiple practices as a full participant, Maier will make his third straight start as the two-time Grey Cup champ continues to heal from a broken leg suffered in Week 1.

Head coach Dave Dickenson has indicated that Mitchell will return as the starter as soon as he is healthy enough to do so. The 31-year-old was diagnosed with a fractured fibula and missed his team’s two most recent games.

Mitchell has yet to reach his usual MOP-calibre level of play this year, completing 44-of-73 pass attempts for 542 yards, one touchdown, and five interceptions in two losses to open the season.

The Stamps went 1-1 in his absence with Maier exceeding expectations, particularly in a narrow Week 4 loss to the Blue Bombers. Maier hass thrown for over 300 yards in both of his starts and completed a franchise record 17 straight passes against Winnipeg.

The Elks (1-2) visit the Stampeders (1-3) for their annual Labour Day Classic clash on Monday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. ET. Calgary has won the last eight rivalry games dating back to 2012.
