Despite missing practice on Tuesday with an ankle injury, star Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ defensive end Willie Jefferson will play in Thursday’s CFL season opener, per a report from TSN’s Sara Orlesky.

The six-foot-seven, 250-pound pass-rusher was a full participant in practice on Sunday and Monday, but was unable to go on Tuesday. His status for the Bombers’ home opener was listed as ‘questionable’ on Wednesday’s final injury report, but it now appears he will be on the field for certain.

The 30-year-old was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2019 after recording 24 tackles, 12 sacks, six forced fumbles, and one interception. His presence against the Ticats could prove critical on Thursday, with Hamilton starting a pair of inexperienced offensive tackles in Trevon Tate and Kay Okafor.

Orlesky reported that the two other Bomber listed as ‘questionable’, starting centre Michael Couture and fullback Mike Miller, will also play. Other notable Bombers have been ruled out, including Andrew Harris (calf), Darvin Adams (shoulder), and Kyrie Wilson (thigh).

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers will kick-off the 2021 CFL regular season on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET at IG Field. Ticket sales for the event are reportedly moving fast with a chance of reaching a sellout.
