Saskatoon native Brett Boyko taking first-team reps at right tackle for Riders

Canadian offensive lineman Brett Boyko is taking first-team reps at right tackle for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, according to Murray McCormick of the Regina Leader-Post.

General manager Jeremy O’Day told the media on Saturday that the Riders have the ability to start four Canadian offensive linemen. It appears that is the plan for the club’s season-opening game against the B.C. Lions on Friday.

American Terran Vaughn is taking first-team reps at left tackle, while the three interior spots have been filled with Canadians Logan Ferland (left guard), Dan Clark (centre), and Evan Johnson (right guard).

Remarkably, all four of Saskatchewan’s presumed Canadian starters along the offensive line were born in the prairie province. Boyko is from Saskatoon, Johnson and Clark are from Regina, and Ferland is from the small town of Melfort, which is located almost 200 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

Boyko started five games at tackle for the B.C. Lions in 2019 and struggled, losing his starting job. He’ll have to show improvement if the club hopes to keep franchise quarterback Cody Fajardo upright in the club’s season-opener.
