Elks release seven, including former Argos’ receiver Rodney Smith

The Edmonton Elks released the following seven players as part of 2021’s first training camp cutdown day.

American running back Marvin Kinsey Jr.
American receiver Jerry Louie-McGee
American receiver Shakier Ryan
National offensive lineman Kwabena Asare
American defensive lineman Tevaughn Grant
American defensive lineman Deonte Holden
American receiver Rodney Smith

Smith is the biggest name, having started consistently for the Toronto Argonauts in 2019. The six-foot-five, 235-pound target made 74 receptions for 903 yards and five touchdowns over 23 games with the team.

Ryan is another name fans may recognize as a former return specialist for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, B.C. Lions, and Montreal Alouettes. He as one kickoff return touchdown and one punt return touchdown in just nine career CFL games.

Asare was a sixth-round pick of the Elks in the 2017 CFL Draft. The six-foot-eight, 280-pound blocker out of Carleton dressed for five games in 2019 but did not make a start.

Update: the Elks have also released American linebacker Ethan Aguayo, American defensive lineman Mat Boesen, American defensive lineman Chei Hill, and American linebacker Antonio Jones-Davis.
