Former CFL defensive coordinator Kahlil Carter hired by Waukee High School

A former CFL coach is headed to the high school ranks.

Waukee High School in Iowa has hired Kahlil Carter to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator, the same role he briefly held with the Montreal Alouettes.

Carter joined the Alouettes during the 2018 off-season as defensive coordinator, but resigned suddenly ten days prior to training camp, citing personal reasons. He transitioned into role in the team’s scouting department and was replaced by Rich Stubler.

Prior to his time with Montreal, Carter served three seasons as defensive backs coach for the Calgary Stampeders from 2015 to 2017. The Stamps posted the best pass defence in the league during Carter’s final two years, but the club abruptly cut ties with the coach just a few days after they lost 27-24 to the Toronto Argonauts in the 105th Grey Cup game.

Before transitioning to coaching, Carter was versatile defensive back in the NFL, NFL Europe and Arena Football League. He played parts of four seasons in the CFL from 2005 to 2008. He played 35 games for the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes, finishing with 75 tackle, 10 special teams tackles, 10 interceptions and three defensive touchdowns.

Carter joins a Waukee Warriors team poised for a breakout under new head coach Gabe Bakker. The 5A program is coming off a 7-3 season and a trip to the state quarter-finals.
