Former NFL, Riders defensive back Will Blackmon: Regina ‘smelled like farm and manure’

Former Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Will Blackmon wasn’t a fan of Chris Jones and his coaching staff while in Regina.

After a 10-year NFL career, Blackmon signed with the Riders in 2018 and played one game making four tackles and forcing one fumble in a Labour Day Classic victory over Winnipeg.

“Great passion, sold out every game, everybody is super nice, if you play for the Roughriders they love you. The people were really nice in Canada, the people were nice, the coaches weren’t nice,” Blackmon told Canadian broadcaster Julie Stewart-Binks.

Jones was in his second season as bench boss with Saskatchewan at the time. Blackmon retired after one game in Canada and took a job with NFL Network. He was originally drafted by Green Bay and played four years with the Packers.

“I got off the plane, and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m in Green Bay.’ It is the Green Bay of Canada — it is the exact same thing,” Blackmon said. “It smelled like farm and manure, everything was flat, they had all the chain restaurants and they love their football team, who is also green.”

Blackmon won Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants.
