Longtime Saskatchewan Roughriders’ fullback Steve Molnar has passed away

Former Saskatchewan Roughriders’ fullback Steve Molnar passed away on Saturday at the age of 73.

A graduate of Saskatoon’s Aden Bowman Collegiate, Molnar spent ten seasons with the Riders from 1969 to 1978. He rushed 570 times for 2,549 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 142 passes for 1,552 yards and two scores.

The Utah product’s best season came in 1976 when he took over the starting role from George Reed, who had retired just before the season. Saskatchewan came close to capping that year with a Grey Cup title, but lost narrowly to the Ottawa Rough Riders by a score of 23-20.

“Steve was the ultimate team guy,” former team President/CEO Jim Hopson told the Regina Leader-Post, who played with Molnar for four seasons.

“He did not get a lot of carries backing up George, but he was always ready. He was a great blocker and special-teams guy. It was great to see him get his chance in ’76 and he stepped up in a big way.”

Molnar and his family moved to Ontario in 1987 where he lived until his passing.
