Arizona Cardinals sign former CFL kicker/punter Brett Maher to practice squad

The Arizona Cardinals have added former CFL kicker/punter Brett Maher to the practice squad.

The Nebraska product played four seasons in the CFL as a member of Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Ottawa. He connected of 107-of-137 field goal attempts (78.1 percent) with a long of 58 yards.

The Dallas Cowboys took notice of his success and signed Maher in April 2018. He beat out Dan Bailey — the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history — to win the team’s placekicking job. Through two seasons and 29 games with the Cowboys, Maher connected on 49-of-63 field goals (74.2 percent) and made good on 68-of-69 extra point kicks.

The 31-year-old has had stints with New York, Washington, and Houston this season as a reserve kicker. He has yet to dress for a game, spending time primarily on the practice roster.

The Cardinals are third in the NFC West Division with a record of 8-6 and are currently on pace the reach the postseason. Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ quarterback Chris Streveler serves as the team’s primary backup behind former No. 1 over draft pick Kyler Murray.
