New York Jets sign former CFL kicker Sergio Castillo to practice squad

After being released from the 53-man active roster and clearing waivers, former CFL kicker Sergio Castillo has been signed to the New York Jets practice squad.

Castillo struggled last Sunday in a 40-3 loss to Seattle, missing three-of-four field goal attempts in Week 14. He entered the game seven-of-nine on three-point attempts this season with one block, but his poor performance caused the demotion.

The 30-year-old Castillo originally signed a practice roster agreement with the Jets on October 14. He made his regular season NFL debut in Week 7 during an 18-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, making his lone field goal attempt from 29 yards out. He’s converted 8-of-13 three point tries in six NFL games so far, including to fro 50-plus yards.

Castillo enjoyed a career year with the B.C. Lions in 2019, making 41-of-45 field goal attempts and 30-of-33 convert attempts, a success rate of over 90 percent in both categories. He was named a West Division all-star before opting out of his contract to pursue the NFL.

Prior to signing with the Lions, Castillo suited up in 20 games over three seasons (2015-2017) with Winnipeg, Ottawa and Hamilton where he made 39-of-47 field goal attempts.

The Jets remain winless at 0-13 with games the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots remaining on the schedule. Sam Ficken has been designated to return and handle kicking duties for New York.

Ficken was placed on injured reserve November 24 with a groin injury. He’s made nine-of-10 field goal attempts and eight-of-10 extra points. For his career, Ficken has connected on 72.1 percent of his field goals, 31-of-43 and 88.2 percent of his extra points 45-of-51.
