Former CFL quarterback Chris Streveler ‘can be effective if called upon’ by Arizona Cardinals

All eyes in Arizona are on franchise quarterback Kyler Murray and his right throwing shoulder.

Murray suffered an AC joint sprain in the Cardinals’ (6-4) loss to Seattle (7-3) in Week 11 on Thursday Night Football. If the 2019 first overall pick is unable to play on Sunday against New England, former Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ quarterback Chris Streveler would start.

“Strev has been impressive since he got here. His preparation, his attention to detail, the way he attacks every drill in practice,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury said in a conference call with New England reporters, specifically Zack Cox from NESN.

“Every opportunity he had in training camp, he really took advantage of. It was tough for him not having pre-season football — I think that would have really been good for him — but we felt like he really played at a high level in practice and proved to us that he can be effective if called upon.”

During Week 1 of the NFL season, Streveler became the first former CFL quarterback to register an NFL statistic in almost eleven years. Jeff Garcia recorded three carries for minus-two yards and a fumble as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles on September 27, 2009. It was the final time the 1998 Grey Cup MVP would record a statistic in his career.

The University of South Dakota product was a key part of Winnipeg’s 2019 Grey Cup run. He rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown in the West Semi-Final and threw a touchdown pass in the Grey Cup, a 33-12 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Streveler managed to play through a broken bone in his foot, hurt ribs and shoulder issue as the X-factor for Winnipeg during the Bombers three road wins on the way to CFL title. Fully healthy now, Streveler could be leading the Cardinals offence in a crucial match-up with playoff ramifications on the line.
