Canadian receiver John Metchie III scores first career NCAA touchdown on 78-yard reception for Alabama

Canadian receiver John Metchie III has scored his first career NCAA touchdown in highlight reel style for the University of Alabama.

The Brampton, ON native hauled it in, covering 78 yards for the impressive TD. Metchie III was just warming up. He added four more catches to finish the game with five receptions for 181 yards and two touchdowns, the second score a 63-yard romp.

Metchie was the breakout star of Alabama’s 52-24 victory against Texas A&M.

The sophomore pass catcher had two athletic grabs for 42 yards in Alabama’s 38-19 season-opening win over Missouri.

Metchie III played in all 13 games as a true freshman last season, totaling four catches for 23 yards. He was highly recruited and chose Alabama over Georgia, Maryland and Penn State among many other major Division I program scholarship offers.

The six-foot, 195-pound Canuck elected to attend prep school in the United States instead of play Canadian high school football. He went to St. James School in Hagerstown, Maryland and recorded more than 1,300 rushing yards, 2,500 receiving yards and 42 touchdowns during his four seasons there.

Current Calgary Stampeders defensive back, University of Guelph product, Royce Metchie is his older brother. The younger Metchie has announced his arrival on the Southeastern Conference scene.
