Chris Streveler becomes first former CFL QB to register NFL statistic since 2009

Chris Streveler made a bit of history on Sunday, becoming the first CFL quarterback to register an NFL statistic in almost eleven years.

Jeff Garcia recorded three carries for minus-two yards and a fumble as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles on September 27, 2009. It was the final time the 1998 Grey Cup MVP would recorded a statistic in his career.

Streveler registered one carry for three yards in the third quarter of Sunday’s game between Arizona and San Francisco, converting on a key third down. The Cardinals’ starting quarterback, former No. 1 NFL draft pick Kyler Murray, remained on the field with Streveler and ran in motion behind the line of scrimmage. Unlike the CFL, the NFL allows more than one quarterback to be on the field at the same time.

The game ended in a 24-20 victory for Arizona over the heavily-favoured, defending NFC champion 49ers. Murray posted a Streveler-like stat line of 26-of-40 passing for 230 yards, one touchdown and one interception along with 13 carries for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Streveler was the Cardinals’ lone backup quarterback on Sunday after journeyman Brett Hundley was scratched and listed as an inactive an hour before kickoff. “Got in on a little wedge action and we got a huge dub! Fun day,” Streveler tweeted after the game.

The University of South Dakota product was a key part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ 2019 Grey Cup run. He rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown in the West Semi-Final and threw a touchdown pass in the Grey Cup, a 33-12 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

It will be intriguing to watch how the dual-threat quarterback is utilized by head coach (and former Winnipeg quarterback) Kliff Kingsbury as the 2020 NFL season progresses.
