NFL cutdown day may be Saturday, however teams are still taking a look at CFL players who have opted out of their contracts to be prepared should injuries arise.

The latest player to earn an NFL workout, according to MMQB reporter Albert Breer, is former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Janarion Grant. The electric kick returner worked out for the Miami Dolphins on Friday after opting out of CFL his contract last week.

Grant played 11 games for the 2019 Grey Cup champions last year, returning 41 punts for 591 yards and three touchdowns, two of which came during his improbable debut for the Bombers. He added 25 kick-off returns for 600 yards and one missed field goal return of 61 yards.

Grant spent five years returning kicks at Rutgers University prior to turning pro. In 46 games, he amassed 2,857 yards and five touchdowns on 115 kick returns. He also returned 52 punts for 588 yards and three scores.

After going unselected in 2018, Grant made the Baltimore Ravens active roster as their primary returner but was waived to the practice squad after two fumbles in his first two games. Grant began the 2019 season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but was released after a short practice roster stint.

Grant’s game-breaking return ability is intriguing for any team needing help in the area and he’s now clearly on the shortlist of players to call if a return man goes down.
