Stampeders’ DB Lorenzo Jerome opts out of CFL contract

Calgary Stampeders defensive back Lorenzo Jerome is the latest in a string of CFL players to opt out of their contracts for a potential NFL shot following the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season, per sources.

The versatile defender played in seven games for the Stamps last season, recording 11 defensive tackles, six take downs on special teams and one interception. With fellow Stampeders defensive backs like Tre Roberson and DaShaun Amos in the NFL, Jerome was expected to take on a larger role had the Canadian schedule gone ahead.

Jerome was an impact player over four years at tiny Saint Francis University and became the first member of the Red Flash to make it to the NFL in 52 years. He made the 53-man roster of the San Francisco 49ers as a rookie in 2017 before being released in October of that year. He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks for the 2018 pre-season, but was released at the end of training camp, turning his attention north.

With no football being played in the CFL this season, Jerome hopes his roster experience could attract some NFL interest.
