Stampeders linebacker Wynton McManis opts out of CFL contract for NFL chance

Calgary Stampeders linebacker Wynton McManis has been granted release following his decision to opt out of his CFL contract.

McManis was in the second year of a two-year pact. The 25-year-old will be a free agent should he return to the CFL. 2020 would have been his fourth season in Calgary.

McManis had a breakout campaign in 2019, starting 15 games and recording 86 defensive tackles, nine special teams’ tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble. In his two previous seasons, McManis was a core special teamer and led the league with 25 special teams’ tackles in 2018.

The graduate of the University of Memphis went unselected in the 2016 NFL Draft before signing with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent. He earned a spot on the team’s practice roster before being elevated to the active roster in late December. McManis was waived by the 49ers before the 2017 season and made his way to Calgary.

McManis hopes his 2019 emergence in a Stampeders’ linebacking corps that has already sent players like Alex Singleton, Jameer Thurman and Nate Holley to the NFL will give him an opportunity south of the border.
