Former CFL all-star DB Tre Roberson clears NFL waivers, placed on Chicago Bears non-football injury list

The Chicago Bears have placed defensive back Tre Roberson on the team’s reserve/non-football injury list.

Roberson was waived Tuesday with a non-football injury designation and passed through the 24-hour period unclaimed, which allowed general manager Ryan Pace to stash the talented cover man while he heals from a broken foot. The 27-year-old suffered the setback while training for the 2020 NFL season.

“That was disappointing. He’s disappointed. He broke his foot this off-season training and we’re going to work through that with him. He’s a good young player; someone we scouted heavily in the CFL. It’s just an unfortunate injury, but something he can recover from, and we’re going to work through him on that process,” Pace said.

In 2019, Roberson earned CFL all-star honours and was the Calgary Stampeders nominee for the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. He made 16 starts and ranked second in the CFL with seven interceptions.

The six-foot, 200-pounder scored two touchdowns – one on an interception return and one on a fumble recovery. Roberson also had 12 knockdowns – the third-highest total in the CFL – as well as 41 tackles. In 32 career regular season games over two seasons with Calgary, Roberson has 95 tackles and 10 interceptions.

Chicago investing in Roberson’s recovery process means the Bears value his potential as a player in the future.
