The Lions announced the signing of defensive lineman J.R. Tavai to a one year deal on the opening day of CFL free agency. Tavai joins the Lions after spending the last two seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks.

2019 was a particularly productive year for Tavai as he led the Redblacks with seven sacks. He also added another 49 tackles and three forced fumbles. Tavai was also fined for a headshot on Montreal Alouettes quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.
