The Montreal Alouettes and head coach Khari Jones appear to be nearing agreement on a contract extension.
Jones’ contract runs out at the end of year. He was the offensive coordinator for Montreal when the Als relived Mike Sherman of his duties just days prior to kick-off for the 2019 season. Jones was promoted to the head coach role, adding bench boss duties to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
The former CFL quarterback is the Alouettes’ seventh head coach in as many years: Dan Hawkins, 2013; Jim Popp, 2013, 2015-2016; Tom Higgins, 2014-2015; Jacques Chapdelaine, 2016-2017; Reed, 2017; Sherman, 2018; and Jones, 2019.
But Montreal is trying to keep continuity with the man who has changed the direction of the franchise. The 48-year-old led the Als to a 10-8 record and first post-season appearance since 2014, breaking a franchise long streak out of the playoffs which was four years.
If Montreal let Jones get to the open coaching market he would be a highly sought after head coaching candidate. The Alouettes are working to get it done.
