Buono has been brought on by the Montreal Alouettes to help with the decision on the next general manager in La Belle Province, according to team president Patrick Boivin.

The former Alouette player grew up in Montreal and went on to become the winningest coach in CFL history over three decades with the Stampeders and Lions. The Canadian Football Hall of Famer won 282 games and five Grey Cups during his career, holding dual head coach/GM roles in both Calgary and B.C.

Buono retired from coaching at the end of last season, a year after relinquishing B.C. GM duties to Ed Hervey, but it seems he still can’t resist a challenge.

While Montreal is reportedly close to re-signing head coach Khari Jones, Buono’s offensive coordinator with the Lions from 2014-2017, the GM chair has been empty since Kavis Reed was relieved of his duties in July. The league-run franchise is also in the midst of a seemingly never-ending ownership saga that could influence hiring in any number of ways.

An experienced hand like Buono will be a valuable commodity to the team in their hiring search, but the “Godfather” will certainly have his work cut out for him.
