Lions Ed Hervey asks for permission to interview former Redblacks’ head coach Rick Campbell

After relieving DeVone Claybrooks of head coach duties, B.C. Lions’ general manager Ed Hervey has already shifted his focus to filling the position.

Rick Campbell decided to walk away from the Ottawa Redblacks, which was first reported by 3DownNation insider Justin Dunk and made official on Monday.

Campbell went 44-62-2 with a 4-3 post-season record with one Grey Cup win during his time as the head coach for the Redblacks. Prior to his time in Ottawa, Campbell was a special teams coordinator with the Eskimos, part of the 2003 title team, and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2005 when Edmonton captured another ring.

Hervey, who quietly signed a two-year extension prior to the 2019 season, played receiver for the Esks while Campbell’s dad Hugh was president of the team. The Campbell name would bring instant credibility to the Vancouver sports market and the 48-year-old is a well-liked bench boss with a championship pedigree.
