LFA selects 25 Canadian prospects in inaugural draft

More than two dozen Canadian football players are heading south for the winter.

25 Canadian prospects — almost all of whom attended USports programs — were selected in Friday’s inaugural Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) draft.

The highest profile player selected was UBC product Alex Morrisson, a former fourth-round draft pick of the Montreal Alouettes.

Morrisson returned to the Thunderbirds for his fifth year of eligibility in 2017, making 42 receptions for 708 yards and 10 touchdowns. He missed the entire 2018 season due to injury and was briefly a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ practice roster in July.

Canadian players will be provided with room and board during their LFA stint and paid 350.00 USD per game (after taxes). They will also be provided with health plans that cover medical expenses.

The season in Mexico runs from January to May, so participants will be eligible to participate in CFL training camps once the LFA season concludes. CFL teams were asked to help compile a list of potential draft picks.
