The Ottawa Redblacks are ending the season the way the team started it at quarterback.
Dominque Davis will be the No. 1 QB when Montreal visits the nation’s capital in Week 21. The 30-year-old last took the field in Week 16 against the Edmonton Eskimos.
“I’m not disappointed at any of our quarterbacks. They would say they need to play better. But they haven’t been put in the best position to succeed. This was (Davis’) first time as being a full-time starter. With the co-ordinator leaving, it wasn’t an ideal situation,” head coach Rick Campbell told Ottawa Sun reporter Tim Baines.
“If you had, say, a guy like Henry Burris in this situation, it would be so different because he was so experienced and had played for such a long time. It would be different if Dom had started for 10 years and was thrown into this situation. It would be easier to manage. It hasn’t been an ideal scenario. I still was optimistic — you saw our first two games, we were able to score and win.”
Davis has completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,061 yards with five touchdowns and 14 interceptions while rushing 28 times for 109 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and six touchdowns. He has a 3-5 win-loss record as a starter for Ottawa.
Will Arndt started at QB for the Redblacks’ last three games and threw for 594 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, but put up an 0-3 record. Prior to Arndt being behind centre it was largely Jonathon Jennings who went 0-6.
No matter who has been taking snaps for Ottawa in 2019, the offence has struggled scoring a league-low 280 points and CFL-worst 20 offensive touchdowns. It’s been a perfect storm for failure on offence according to Campbell.
