Canadian QB Michael O’Connor sees first live CFL action, throws TD

A young national quarterback has finally made his much-anticipated CFL debut.

Michael O’Connor got into Saturday’s game in the fourth quarter against the Ottawa Redblacks. McLeod Bethel-Thompson played the entire first half, while Dakota Prukop took the third quarter.

O’Connor quickly orchestrated a touchdown drive, completing four-of-four pass attempts for 59 yards and a score to Rodney Smith.

The 23-year-old has dressed for eight games this year but had yet to play until Saturday’s game.

O’Connor was selected in the third round of May’s draft. The six-foot-four, 230-pound pivot originally committed to Penn State before transferring to UBC.

The Ottawa native tested well at the combine and has been called the next great Canadian quarterback. He attended mini-camp with the Seattle Seahawks in early May but was not offered a contract.
