General manager Jim Popp not expected to be retained by Argos: report

Toronto Argonauts’ general manager Jim Popp is about to be out of a job.

According to Canadian Press reporter Dan Ralph:

Front-office changes in Toronto appear inevitable. Popp is in the final year of his contract and the expectation is he won’t be retained.

Popp was hired by the Argos in February 2017. That season Toronto finished 9-9, which was enough for first place in the East Division and a bye to the East Final. Ricky Ray led a late drive for the Argos to come back and beat Saskatchewan, advancing to the Grey Cup. Toronto upset Calgary to win a championship, but the Boatmen have only taken on water since.

The double blue were dead last in 2018 with a 4-14 record. Marc Trestman lost his job because of it, but the truth is the roster was leaking talent. Popp tried to spend large dollars in free agency to cover the fact that Toronto hadn’t built a competitive roster in the short term or acquired any potential future stars to develop.

Once again, the Argos have the worst record in the CFL at 2-12. Popp’s win-loss mark since a Cinderella run to the Grey Cup is 6-26. Toronto has lost by margins of 50 and 47 points this season, a sorry excuse for a professional football team.

The boat has sunk under Popp’s guidance.
