Jones took a job with the Browns in January as a senior defensive assistant. It’s Jones’ first season coaching in the NFL.

The football lifer was a graduate coach at the University of Alabama in 1997 when Cleveland head coach Freddie Kitchens was a quarterback for the Crimson Tide. That connection led to Kitchens hiring Jones to join his new staff.

NFL teams, including the Browns, conducted extensive research on Jones and gained insight into the one-time Saskatchewan bench boss. Cleveland general manager John Dorsey called the Riders to ask for permission to interview Jones for the position.

The man in black power walks on the prime time stage, even if it was unscripted.
