Ankle injury keeps Riders’ DL Micah Johnson from playing against Alouettes

Riders defensive lineman Micah Johnson won’t be on the field in Montreal during Week 9.

“Micah is not going on the trip. It’s just an ankle sprain, he’s just not ready,” Saskatchewan head coach Craig Dickenson said.

Johnson has played in seven games so far in 2019 making 11 tackles, but he has yet to record a sack after notching 14 a year ago.

The 31-year-old signed a one-year contract worth $250,000, according to 3DownNation insider Justin Dunk. That made Johnson the highest paid defensive player in the CFL.

He was a CFL all-star in 2018 after producing 28 tackles, 14 quarterback takedowns, second most in the league, with three forced fumbles and one interception. Johnson became known as the most disruptive inside force in the league.

Through six seasons in Calgary, Johnson recorded 158 tackles, 41 sacks, six forced fumbles and two interceptions. But Johnson turned down more than $200,000 from Calgary to hit the open market and eventually switched to Saskatchewan.

The Riders are expecting Johnson to be more productive when healthy.
