The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have placed defensive lineman Jackson Jeffcoat on the six-game injured list.

Jeffcoat suited up in seven games to start the season making 11 tackles, three sacks and forcing one fumble prior to suffering an injury during Winnipeg’s Week 8 loss to Toronto.

The 28-year-old signed a two-year contract extension through the 2020 season in January. Jeffcoat had five sacks and 21 defensive tackles last season and added two sacks in the playoffs. He had seven sacks in his rookie season in 2017. He has elite-level talent but needs to stay healthy: he played in just 12 games last season after suiting up for 16 in his first year.

The Dallas native worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals in December but an inability to stay on the field likely cost him an NFL shot. By signing a two-year deal, Jeffcoat could get another chance to work out for American teams next winter as part of the reinstated NFL window. But at 28 years old and 29 in December the likelihood of an NFL contract seems like a long shot, especially after suffering a physical setback.

Veteran defensive lineman Craig Roh takes Jeffcoat’s spot in the lineup opposite Willie Jefferson.
