CFLPA union leader defends tentative deal: ‘we had to fight for everything’

The terms of the new collective bargaining agreement between the CFL and the players are likely to start leaking out at any moment but there’s already a sense of foreboding from players.

A couple of guys I’ve spoken to are worried that players will, once again, get the short end of the stick.

Veteran CFL player John Bowman was a member of the union’s bargaining committee, which means he was at the bargaining table. He’s already defending the agreement and talking about how difficult the negotiations were.

Key issues for the union were overall compensation (the salary cap) the ratio (which was rumoured to be going from seven to five Canadian starters) the minimum salary and protections for severely injured players.

So we’ll see.
