Riders GM Jeremy O’Day knows ‘big question’ exists at quarterback

Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager Jeremy O’Day knows he needs to find a quarterback.

“Obviously, a big question is that position,” O’Day said.

O’Day’s predecessor Chris Jones – planned to make a strong play for Mike Reilly – could never find a permanent, franchise-type quarterback in three seasons with the Riders.

Reilly and Trevor Harris – Bo Levi Mitchell seems focused on the NFL for now – are established upper echelon quarterbacks who are pending free agents yet to re-sign with the organizations for which they played for in 2018.

“I’m not going to comment on any of the quarterbacks that are on other teams currently. It’s an interesting set of circumstances with how the CBA is lining up this year and the amount of free agents that we have at that position,” O’Day said.

Zach Collaros and Brandon Bridge – the two primary pivots for Saskatchewan last season – are both scheduled to hit the open market.

“I have not eliminated the possibility of any of our guys coming back next year. But we are going to evaluate that on an ongoing basis and also see how it pans out, see whose going to be available once free agency starts,” O’Day said.

Veteran Kevin Glenn might end up being available on February 12. The veteran passer has three separate stints with the Riders. Glenn began his CFL career in Saskatchewan and signed on to be a Rider two different times as a free agent in 2015 and 2015.

O’Day actually traded Glenn at the 2015 trade deadline for a fifth-round pick and Jones released the 39-year-old one day after acquiring Collaros one year ago. Glenn is just one of a number of options – excluding Darian Durant – for the Riders at the game’s most important position.

“My job is going to be to try to get the best quarterback we can,” O’Day said, that’s our quarterback for the Roughriders.”
