O’Day shuts down possible return of Durant to Riders

Jeremy O’Day isn’t looking to the past to fix his team’s quarterbacking situation.

O’Day, introduced this afternoon as the new vice president and general manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, wasted no time in clarifying the status of retired pivot Darian Durant.

“We won’t have an interest in Darian,” said O’Day in his his introductory press conference.

Durant recently expressed interest in returning to the team, telling CJME 980’s Jamie Nye, “I know that there are a lot of people that would love me.”

Durant announced his retirement this past May after signing with the Bombers in January of 2018. The 36-year-old received a $70,000 signing bonus as part of his deal with Winnipeg, a dollar figure he felt he deserved despite not playing a down for the team.

The Bombers wanted Durant to pay the signing bonus back, but he refused. This drew the anticipated response from Rider Nation, a group that was ecstatic to learn the long-time Roughrider would not be suiting up for Winnipeg.

The future of the quarterback position in Saskatchewan remains in question, but one thing’s for sure — Durant will not be part of it.
