Argos re-sign all-star Canadian OL Ryan Bomben

The Toronto Argonauts have re-signed Canadian offensive lineman Ryan Bomben to a three-year contract through the 2021 season.

“Trading for Ryan last season and now extending him for the future was important,” Argos general manager Jim Popp said in a statement. “It gives us additional quality leadership on the team and in the community, experience in the trenches and flexibility with our ratio. We just got better today for the 2019 season.”

The 31-year-old Bomben had been dealt to the Montreal Alouettes prior to the 2018 season in a deal involving the No. 1 overall draft pick going to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

After six games in Montreal, the Alouettes traded Bomben to the Toronto Argonauts for defensive back T.J. Heath. Toronto also got a 2020 fifth round pick while Montreal acquired the Argos third rounder that same year.

“My family and I are thrilled to be back in Toronto,” Bomben said in a statement. “Last season’s outcome was obviously disappointing, but I believe in the direction this team is going. We have a great group of guys and a great locker room which is why I wanted to come back to the Toronto organization. Jim Popp’s track record is tremendous and I am confident that he will do whatever it takes to put us in the best position to win.”

Bomben has played eight years and 138 career games, named a CFL East Division all-star the last four years. Popp originally selected Bomben in the fourth round, 31st overall of the 2010 CFL draft.
