Top ranked CFL Draft prospect, DL Jonathan Kongbo suffers season-ending knee injury

Canadian defender Jonathan Kongbo has had his NCAA career cut short due to a knee injury.

Kongbo, who played for the University of Tennessee, suffered season-ending ACL and MCL tears against Auburn University on October 13.

The native of Surrey, B.C., has played 30 games over three seasons with the Volunteers as a linebacker and defensive lineman amassing 51 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions including a 50-yarder returned for a touchdown and two knockdowns.

Kongbo was highly touted coming out of Holy Cross high school as a three-sport athlete, basketball and track along with football. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Wyoming, although he redshirted during the 2014 season then transferred to Arizona Western college.

After gaining a reputation as the No. 1 junior college defensive line prospect while at Arizona, Kongbo received scholarships offers from Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, USC, Florida State, Washington, Ole Miss and Tennessee. The six-foot-six, 264-pounder chose the Volunteers.

Kongbo was the No. 1 ranked player on the CFL scouting bureau in September and while it remains to be seen how the injury will impact his standing in the draft and his NFL prospects, he seems to be taking the setback in stride.
