CFL power rankings: Back to this again

So, back to this again.

An unpredictable start to the CFL season saw seismic shake ups virtually every week, teams jumping (or falling) several spots on a regular basis. The Riders, for example, we’re the No. 3 team on June 16, No. 6 a week later and No. 8 by mid-July. On Sept. 11, they were No. 2. And so it goes.

This week’s rankings sees seven of nine teams in new spots including a familiar face back at No. 9….

1. Calgary Stampeders (Previous ranking: 1)

The Stamps sat on their couches and watched their West Division rivals struggle against the East. And they get Toronto at home on Friday night with a chance to clinch their post-season spot.

2. Ottawa Redblacks (Previous ranking: 3)

The Redblacks jump up after taking down the Eskimos at home and they are on a bye this week. A divisional title is in their sites.

3. Saskatchewan Roughriders (Previous ranking: 4)

The Riders hung on against the Argos and that was enough to nudge them up one spot. On the road in Montreal seems like a gimme but the Riders have already lost to the Alouettes this season.

4. Edmonton Eskimos (Previous ranking: 2)

Like every other team in the West not named Calgary, the Esks are tough to figure out. Big test at home against Winnipeg this week.

5. B.C. Lions (Previous ranking: 6)

After the miracle win over Hamilton, B.C. has won four straight and travel to Hamilton for the backside of a home-and-home.

6. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Previous ranking: 5)

June Jones is under fire after his team blew what looked to be a sure-fire win against the Lions. They get a shot at redemption right away.

7. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Previous ranking: 7)

The Bombers beat the Alouettes at home but that hasn’t been worth much this season and Winnipeg stays put.

8. Toronto Argonauts (Previous ranking: 9)

The Argonauts were wide left but a strong effort against Saskie was enough to get them out of the rankings’ basement because…

Hey, look who’s back! The Alouettes are dead last again after a two-week respite following a loss to Winnipeg. At least Johnny’s starting which keeps things interesting…
