CFLPA disputes Riders version of events regarding cutting injured players

The Saskatchewan Roughriders faced consequences for releasing injured veteran Rob Bagg, according to the CFLPA.

The Canadian receiver had an ankle issue when the Riders let him go among the team’s final training camp roster moves.

Bagg missed the first seven games of Saskatchewan’s schedule. Riders head coach and general manager Chris Jones said he did not want to risk being fined by the league for keeping Bagg on the six-game injured list if the national pass catcher was not going to be out for the full stint.

“The Saskatchewan Football Club is making it sound as if the player was released without repercussions when in fact the player was made whole for wage loss and medical coverage.  As the union for the players, we expect every team to respect and abide by the collective agreement,” CFLPA executive director Brian Ramsay said.

The 33-year-old has played all of his CFL nine seasons for the Riders recording 364 receptions for 4,705 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was a key part of the 2013 Grey Cup championship squad when the Riders won on home soil in Regina. Bagg was a West Division all-star in 2014.
