Johnny Football benched in first CFL start

Johnny Manziel didn’t even make it to the end of his first CFL game.

Manziel was benched after three quarters as Vernon Adams came on to finish the game. Ironic because Montreal Alouettes fans chanted ‘We want Johnny’ in the Als loss to Edmonton in Week 7 and that ‘hurt‘ Adams.

The 25-year-old celebrity quarterback completed 11-of-20 passes for 104 yards, but four of those attempts were intercepted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats – social media lit up in a multitude of ways – and Manziel managed just four yards rushing on two carries.

That stat line was worse than his first NFL start for the Cleveland Browns in 2014 after being selected in the first round, 22nd overall when Manziel completed 10-of-18 passes for 80 yards and was picked off twice in a 30-o loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

And it was the third debut in a row Manziel lost to go along with a 20-17 defeat in his first NCAA start. Manziel completed 23-of-30 passes for 173 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, but he rushed 17 times for 60 yards and one touchdown while falling to the University of Florida.

Agent Erik Burkhardt felt it was ‘insane‘ for his client to start so soon after the Montreal Alouettes acquired Manziel in a blockbuster trade on July 22.
