Alouettes trade Canadian OL Ryan Bomben to Argos for DB T.J. Heath

The Montreal Alouettes have traded Canadian offensive lineman Ryan Bomben to the Toronto Argonauts for defensive back T.J. Heath. Toronto also gets a 2020 fifth round pick while Montreal acquires the Argos third rounder that year.

The news was broken by the Montreal Gazette’s Herb Zurkowsky.

The 30-year-old Bomben had been dealt to Montreal prior to the 2018 season in a deal involving the No. 1 overall draft pick going to the Hamilton Tigr-Cats. Bomben has started 54 CFL games, named a CFL East Division all-star the last two years and is playing the final season of his contract.

After signing north of the border in 2016, Heath has been a CFL all-star twice in two seasons. He played 16 games between Toronto and Winnipeg in 2016 making 51 tackles and a league-high-tying seven interceptions. The 30-year-old followed that up with 64 tackles, five interceptions (tied for third-most in the league), returning one for a touchdown and recording one sack. The Argos dealt Heath to Winnipeg as part of the Drew Willy trade in September 2016 and re-signed him in free agency.

Bomben and Heath, who recorded 24 tackles and two interceptions, had played just six games for their respective teams before being traded.
