Alouettes sign first-round supplemental draft pick OL Tyler Johnstone

The Montreal Alouettes have signed Canadian offensive lineman Tyler Johnstone.

He was chosen by the Als in the CFL supplemental draft using a first-round pick.

Johnstone played for the University of Oregon starting at left tackle for 39 games, including all 13 in his senior season when he was named a first-team All-Pac 12 selection and named a second-team All-American in 2015.

The 25-year-old went unselected in the 2016 NFL draft, but he was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers and spent that season on the injured reserve. The Chargers released Johnstone in April 2017.

After deciding to play in the CFL, Johnstone entered contract negotiations with the Calgary Stampeders who owned his negotiation list rights. However, through those conversations it was discovered he could be a national player because his dad was born in Calgary, so he got his Canadian citizenship and entered the supplemental draft.
