Duron Carter pleads not guilty to pot possession

Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Duron Carter has pleaded not guilty to marijuana possession and the case is headed to trial.

Carter was charged on Feb. 1 after security officers at the Saskatoon airport found marijuana in his bag following a search. Carter’s next court date is set for July 5 – the same day the Riders are set to host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Carter was not in court for Wednesday’s court appearance in Saskatoon and was represented by legal counsel over the phone.

Carter has already received an absolute discharge after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana stemming from an incident at the Winnipeg airport last November. Both the CFL and team have said they do not expect Carter to face supplementary discipline and the Canadian government recently announced that Canadians will be able to legally purchase and consume recreational marijuana as of Oct. 17.
