Stampeders release former NFL QB Ricky Stanzi

The Calgary Stampeders have released quarterback Ricky Stanzi.

Stanzi spent the 2017 season with Calgary, playing in two games completing 4-of-8 passes for 53 yards. He was the Stamps’ third-string pivot coming out of training camp and served that role during Calgary’s Week 1 victory over Hamilton.

The 30-year-old spent time with six different NFL teams after he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth-round, 135th overall of the 2011 draft, but didn’t see any game action.

The six-foot-four, 220-pound pivot threw for a 7,377 career yards and 56 touchdowns with 31 interceptions at the University of Iowa. He led the Hawkeyes to an Orange Bowl victory over Georgia Tech in 2010. Stanzi was 26-9 as Iowa’s starter and passed for 3,004 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in his senior year.
