June Jones says Ticats QB Vernon Adams will be traded today

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will trade quarterback Vernon Adams to either Montreal or Edmonton today, according to head coach June Jones.

“Vernon, I had a real good talk with him. We are talking trade with two teams actually and it should be, I’m sure, done by the time I get back into the meeting place. Kinda leaving it up to his agent,” Jones said.

The move clears the way for Johnny Manziel to become the primary back up behind Hamilton starter Jeremiah Masoli. The Heisman Trophy winner signed the day before training camp, which impacted Adams.

“As soon as we signed Johnny it changed and that’s what I told Vernon,” Jones said.

“I love Vernon, he’s a great kid. He played really well for me in the East-West Shrine Game and he’s a gamer. Everything in this league changes so fast, just like I told him maybe in two years you’ll be right back here with me, that’s just how this is. The numbers changed so fast when we signed Johnny.”

Adams was acquired in February after a crazy day that saw the Ticats trade for defensive end Charles Hughes from the Calgary Stampeders, then flip him to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for Adams.

The five-foot-11, 200-pound pivot served as the backup to Montreal starter Darian Durant for the first part of the 2017 season, rushing for nine yards on eight carries while scoring a TD. The Alouettes acquired Adams from the B.C. Lions in May 2016. Adams, 24, started three games that season, completing 42-of-75 passes for 575 yards and four TDs.

Saskatchewan acquired Adams from the Montreal Alouettes last August in exchange for Canadian defensive back Tevaughn Campbell and two third-round draft selections.
