Veteran defender Chip Cox officially signs with Alouettes

Linebacker Chip Cox has signed a one-year contract with the Montreal Alouettes through the 2018 season.

The 34-year-old Cox is entering his 13th CFL season, all with the Alouettes.

Cox was added to Montreal’s retired list after he suffered a season-ending injury on Oct. 9, 2017 and his contract with the Alouettes expired in February. He played in 15 games last season, making 67 tackles (second on the team.)

A three-time CFL all-star, two-time Grey Cup champion and 2013 Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Cox has played 12 CFL seasons with the Alouettes making 848 defensive tackles, 27 sacks, 25 forced fumbles, 23 interceptions and scoring six defensive touchdowns while adding 91 special teams tackles.

There had been some speculation that Cox might join the team in another capacity, either as a coach or a scout but general manager Kavis Reed left the door open for a return to the field.

“Chip is one of our leaders on defence,” said Reed said in a statement. “Over the years he’s won individual awards all while being part of championship teams. That experience is a great asset for our team. We know that Chip will be a true mentor for younger players.”
