Eskimos extend GM Sunderland, head coach Maas through 2020

The Edmonton Eskimos have extended the contracts of both general manager Brock Sunderland and head coach Jason Maas through the 2020 season.

The Esks had a team option on Sunderland, who joined the club before the 2017 season after coming over from the Redblacks. Meanwhile, Maas was entering the final year of the deal he signed before the 2016 season under then-general manager Ed Hervey.

Maas, 42, has gone 22-14 in his two seasons at the helm, leading the Eskimos to the postseason in both years. He has, however, come under scrutiny last year after a couple of emotional outbursts on the sideline – including one that saw him berate an assistant coach and another that led him to get all smashy-smashy with a headset – as well as his head-scratching decision to kick a field goal while down seven points with under two minutes to go in the West Division final in a game they ultimately lost to the Calgary Stampeders.

Sunderland is the youngest general manager in the CFL at 38 and joined the Eskimos after stints with the Montreal Alouettes, New York Jets and Ottawa Redblacks.
