John Hodge’s CFL mock draft 2.0

With the 2018 NFL draft in the books, it’s time to take a look at which prospects may end up where and why.

Many of the picks below differ from my first mock draft, found here.

Round One

Today’s CFL news in your inbox every afternoon.

1. Montreal Alouettes — OL Trey Rutherford, UConn

A stud athlete with the ability to play both guard and tackle, Montreal uses the first pick in the draft to select a player who should be a fixture on their offensive line for years to come.

2. Hamilton Tiger-Cats — REC Mark Chapman, Central Michigan

Hamilton lands the most polished Canadian receiver prospect the draft has seen in years.

3. B.C. Lions — OL Peter Godber, Rice

The Lions land the draft’s heaviest lifter who could look to become a day-one starter at guard.

4. Ottawa Redblacks — OL David Knevel, Nebraska

The Redblacks add the behemoth offensive lineman (6’9, 315) who has the potential to start in the CFL at offensive tackle.

5. Saskatchewan Roughriders — REC Rashaun Simonise, Calgary

The ‘Canadian Duron Carter’ joins the original Duron Carter in Riderville where his athleticism and natural ability will be most coveted.

6. Edmonton Eskimos — DB Godrey Onyeka, Wilfrid Laurier

Onyeka could be the hard-hitting safety that Edmonton needs to round out their vaunted defence.

7. Winnipeg Blue Bombers — OL Mark Korte, Alberta

The most athletic lineman available in this year’s draft, Korte will be given time to continue developing his frame before one day entering the starting line-up.

8. Calgary Stampeders — OL Ryan Sceviour, Calgary

The Stamps go local to grab a versatile lineman with quicks and a pro-ready body.

9. Toronto Argonauts — DB Jackson Bennett, Ottawa

I believe Jackson could be the first Canadian prospect in a long time with the potential to start at the league’s ultra-tough strong-side linebacker position.

Round Two

10. Hamilton Tiger-Cats — OL Andrew Pickett, Guelph

Pickett has a pro-ready frame and will be able to contribute in a depth role right away.

11. Hamilton Tiger-Cats — DL Julien Laurent, Georgia State

The Tabbies add the draft’s top interior defensive lineman to continue building depth behind perennial all-star Ted Laurent.

12. B.C. Lions — DB Isaiah Guzylak-Messam, Wilfrid Laurier

An impressive athlete with a long frame, Guzylak-Messam has the ability to play both cornerback and safety.

13. Ottawa Redblacks — REC Daniel Petermann, McMaster

Brad Sinopoli recently reached the age of thirty and it’s time for Ottawa to begin developing talent behind him.

14. Saskatchewan Roughriders — OL Darius Ciraco, Calgary

The Riders grab a stout offensive lineman to continue building depth in the trenches.

15. Hamilton Tiger-Cats — RB David Mackie, Western

A smooth runner, Mackie will contribute as both a long snapper and pass-catcher out of the backfield.

16. Winnipeg Blue Bombers — OL Ryan Hunter, Bowling Green

The Bombers draft the first ‘future’ of the draft in this guard/tackle who is currently a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

17. Calgary Stampeders — OL Dakoda Shepley, UBC

Calgary grabs the second ‘future’ of the draft with this undrafted member of the New York Jets.

18. Toronto Argonauts — OL Arnaud Gendron-Dumouchel, Montreal

The gargantuan Francophone (6’9, 310) joins the Argos as a potential future starter at offensive tackle.

Round Three

19. Montreal Alouettes — DL Bo Banner, Central Washington

Montreal acquire some depth behind free agent addition Jamaal Westerman with the draft’s best pass rusher.

20. Hamilton Tiger-Cats — DB Jordan Beaulieu, Western

Beaulieu provides the Tabbies with help on special teams as well as depth behind starting safety Courtney Stephen.

21. B.C. Lions — LB Micah Teitz, Calgary

The Lions scoop up arguably the best linebacker in the draft for some much-needed depth and help on special teams.

22. Ottawa Redblacks — DL Brett Wade, Calgary

Wade doesn’t have the highest ceiling — he’s already in his mid-twenties — but should be able to contribute right away for an Ottawa team that lost Zach Evans to free agency.

23. Montreal Alouettes — REC Regis Cibasu, Montreal

The Alouettes grab a local pass catcher who has the size to contribute on special teams.

24. Toronto Argonauts — LB Paul Kozachuk, Toronto

The Argos go somewhat off the board to gran an ultra-athletic local product who will make an immediate impact on special teams.

25. Calgary Stampeders — DL Mathieu Breton, Bishop’s

A physical specimen at 6-foot-8, 275 pounds, Breton will likely be moved to the offensive side of the ball after draft day.

26. Winnipeg Blue Bombers — REC Marco Dubois, Laval

Dubois may contribute as a receiver in time, but his best value is as a special teams ace with great size and athleticism.
