Johnny Manziel says Ticats ‘slacked on negotiations’

Johnny Manziel offered some insight into the contract negotiations with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on the Dan Patrick Show Wednesday.

“It was definitely close. We got the ok to go to Canada. We started negotiating with them, they kind of slacked on the negotiations a little bit,” Manziel said.

That’s likely when agent Erik Burkhardt released a statement with a hard deadline of January 31 to get a deal done or “turn our focus to several other professional options.”

“We gave what we wanted, it didn’t get met. We said we had other options, [The Spring League was] one of those other options. And it’s no disrespect to them or that league it’s just business,” Manziel said.

“At the end of the day what we wanted didn’t get met and we told them we had other options, [The Spring League] was another option. It’s a step in the right direction, I can’t play a CFL game until June. [The Spring League] gets met two games, training camp, in April.”

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner’s Spring League South team plays on Saturday, April 7 and Thursday, April 12. After The Spring League finishes up, is there still a chance Manziel plays in the CFL?

“Very much so,” Manziel said.
