I really like the 2018 version of the Esks and Sundy has done a very good job as G. M. However, I have to be honest I am a little concerned with the change in leadership in the dressing room. Dealing Willis and Bowman leaves a bit of a void in culture and as much as I like what Mike Reilly does as a leader he cannot do it by himself.

On the defense Sewell, Grymes and Sherritt have to get the young guys focused and stay in step with Eskies culture. On Offense Reilly, Sorensen and Walker need to do the same. Both need to make the locker room function. The Esk success since 2014 has been a culture shift back to a close knit brotherhood. If that is somehow lost it will have a massive impact on the team.

Was never a Young fan, but Pat Watkins and Dex McCoil made him look good in 2014 and 2015 in the press man attacking D the Esks were running under Jones.

Once McCoil left for the NFL, Watkins was nicked up in 2016 and Benny changed the scheme Young was exposed. It didn’t help Young was paired with raw rookies like Deion Belue and then Garry Peters, both disasters in the cover 3 scheme. Young, Bleue and Peters are hands on players that do better in press physical coverage than drop and react coverage.

Belue was awful and Peters was better but still bad forcing Young to cheat and he just didn’t have the speed to close. Grymes does and is aggressive in his cover timing, but then again Adams is a better corner allowing him to take some chances and Benny has adjusted the scheme to more of a cover 2 with more of an aggressive cover.

Hervey loves physicality in a player may they be a receiver, or a DB. Hervey stayed with Young for the same reason he just signed Peters as an F.A. to a contract with the Lions, because he wants a physical over finesse defense. Sundy has opted for closing speed in the secondary, but the Esks now have a need for a couple designated hitters. Konar helped last season and my hope is Ahmad Dixon will make it two hard hitters with one that can cover. Maybe, just maybe Money Hunter wins out over Forrest Hightower at field DB and that would make three big hitters with two that can cover to mix in to 2 aggressive cover types on the boundary and two passive covers at safety and the field corner.

Is it May Yet?

3rd and 1, the guy I am most excited about in the Esk secondary is Ahmad Dixon who should replace Kenny Ladler. Dixon a Baylor product looked good with the Cowboys in 2014 after the drafted him in the 7th round, but after playing well in preseason he missed a walk through and found himself in Jason Garrett’s doghouse. He is 6’0 210 lbs, runs a 4.4/40, hits like a Mack truck and aggressively covers.

Although I don’t think he starts the field DB will be contested by Money Hunter 6’1 195 lbs, Torii Hunter’s son (Minnesota Twins MLB). With Brandyn Thompson coming off a ruptured left Achilles he will most likely open the season on the 1 game IL and that means Forrest Hightower gets a long look a the field DB spot with Hunter pushing him.

Both Dixon and Hunter can cover, but are big hitters that can fight through blocks. With the number of big tough backs tough hard nosed players like Dixon and Hunter will be needed against the run as well as the pass.

It was not that long ago they were the biggest bottom feeders in the league.

After a whistle had blown they still put a QB out of commission for the year.

When a player is pending charges ON sexual assualt they still let him play and then ship them to FA.
