Stamps GM Hufnagel on Marquay McDaniel: ‘I’m all tapped out’

Calgary released veteran receiver Marquay McDaniel earlier in February and gave the impression that there could be a chance he returned to the club.

“We wish him the best of luck and would certainly welcome him back in the future if the circumstances were right for both sides,” general manager John Hufnagel said in a Feb. 9 statement.

But that possibility has changed after what the Stampeders did in free agency.

“I’m not quite sure about that. I think I’m all tapped out, truthfully, unfortunately. I hope he does land somewhere though,” Hufnagel told the media at McMahon Stadium on Friday.

The 33-year-old called out teammate Kamar Jorden after the Stamps’ Grey Cup loss in November, which could have factored into the decision to move on.

McDaniel signed a two-year extension last off-season with Calgary. Year one of the deal saw the 33-year-old make around $150,000 and the second was supposed to pay him $160,000. He produced 860 yards on four touchdowns on 65 catches in 15 games in 2017.

In 2016 McDaniel led Calgary in receptions (83) and yards (1,074) plus added four touchdowns. The vet pass catcher has produced 1,000-yard receiving campaigns in three of the last five seasons with the Stamps.
