Maybe there should be a 9 edition lottery each year to augment players salaries… If it raised $9 million than would be an extra $25k for 40 roster players… People in SK (18% of whom have lottery winnings as an expected part of their pensions — study done in mid-eighties) likely would buy up half the tickets (just like the do when they come to EE and participate in the 50/50). Each lottery could have a $100,000 payout per $500,000 raised… With a bonus of $1,000,000 grand winner if the collective amount of the 9 lotteries exceeded $15 million… And being lottery there is no guarantee of a winner, so even more could be added to the salary pot… Just musing about ways to get creative towards raising the minimums…

I long for the day that min. salary in CFL is $100k CDN, and we get closer to MLS in average salaries of $300k. For this to happen, the next TV deal(s) would need to be about $15 – 20 million higher and I think everyone’s preference would be to stick with TSN. But having CBC and Sportsnet in the mix may get us there. Also, attendance in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver needs to match the prairies. Vancouver can get there with new ownership. In the next 3years it could happen.

Non-import is where they’re vulnerable at the receiver spot. Adjei, Behar & Cory Watson. First two lack size plus Behar is totally unproven. Watson is steady but at 33 years old clock is ticking. It’s obvious that will be a US position but you need more than one dependable Canadian receiver for ratio balance. Sunderland had built a strong Canadian receiver group in Ottawa he needs to work on that for the Esks.

I’ve always said, the day the Oilers traded Gretzky was the day no athlete is ever safe. Riders did the same cutting popular players like Dressler and Chick. It’s tough but it’s a business and fans need to realize that.
