In reply to CFL lover. At the end of the day the CFL can only afford to pay the players what they can. The players know what they are making before they sign the contract. If they aren't happy with the money or incentives they can choose not to sign.

Even the average NFL won't be able to live on thier salary for any more than another 5 years. The commissioner was talking about setting the player up for a career after football. The market will set the salaries of the players. Why would a team pay $200,000 when they can pay $50,000

In reply to RFD. I would argue that I am not bound by another man's handshake. And an organization should not be required to honour alleged back-room deals that are against league rules and aren't written down in a contract. I don't think it's a grey area at all. It's very black-and-white: put it in writing (i.e. in the contract); and if it's not legal to put in the contract, then everyone was aware of that going in and signed the contract with their eyes open.

In reply to CFL lover. If someone can't live on $66,000/year in Canada ($60K salary and $1K/month living expenses), they need serious help with their financial management skills. Many people make less than that in a year, and still manage to pay rent/mortgage, bills, buy food and other necessities for their families, etc. If they really can't control their spending, then getting a second job during the off-season may be necessary, and it's not unreasonable to suggest that they get one.

Like a lot of what you’re suggesting Don specially the cap increase but here’s the problem with roster reduction, football is a beautiful but violent & dangerous sport, guys get injured – a lot !! – If you have 24 starters you absolutely must have at least one or two players backing them up. Your QB goes down, you have no backup, what to do ? 24×2=48, 24×3=72

The CFL needs to pay players more if they want to attract marketable players.
The salary cap at $5M is only slightly higher than the average salary of an NFL player! In order for the CFL to grow as a league and as a business it must attract marketable players. The salary cap saved the league when it was introduced; however, at $5M you’re not going to attract players that are going to fill the stands!
The Argos attendance was a lot higher when they had Doug Flutie, Rocket Ismail, and Ricky Williams. If CFL Teams were to reduce their Roster size they could pay players much more. Football Rosters are RIDICULOUSLY too large. At 46 players, with Offense, Defense, Taxi Squads, Special Teams, and Practice Teams it’s no wonder there isn’t enough Benjamins to go around!
Here’s what CFL should do:
1. Reduce Roster sizes
2. Increase salary cap to $10M
3. Attract some big name American Players.
4.Change import ratio to make room for Canadian QBs.
5. More profit sharing so all teams are in the black.
6. Put Teams in Halifax, London, and Quebec City.

You seem confused Riderontheisland I’m totally for the ratio, not against, i believe strongly in Canadians playing in our league, in fact Ottawa went to the Grey Cup and won it in 2016 while often playing more non-imports than they needed to, their lineup would have 9 canucks out there on the field. I guess that kinda puts the lie to all those naysayers who prattle on about Canadians not deserving to be out there. My response to that ? Bullshit !!
