Good point 3rd and 1. Butler pleading poverty after making between $3-4 million is a bit much. He can be replaced.
Wilder is a stud that Toronto wants to build around. However, if he doesn’t relent from his position, there are lots of good running backs available in free agency starting with Jerome Messam and John White. I predict Wilder will see sense and back down, but him and especially Butler have really done a lot of harm to the Argonauts organization with their public negotiating threats.

I feel a bit for the father slash player Wilder. Simply because he hasn’t had an opportunity to make some big quid. Where as I don’t feel a thing for Victor Buktler that played 7 years in the NFL and now he states in his letter he can’t afford things for his kids?
Come on man. Butler even if you were on the lowest form of pay in the NFL you would have made a few Million Dollars over the 7 years. I had to raise 2 kids a dog and a wife on $70K a year back in the 80’s and 90’s. So don’t give me or anyone else a boo hoo hoo story. Anyone reading this should agree that Victor Butler has enough money to pay his bills and live comfortably. Much more comfortable than most of you’s and I.
Now for me it’s a little different for James Wilder. He’s much younger than Victor Butler and has not had an opportunity to make some serious quid. Plus James Wilder single handily took over the Gaines yardage of the Argos Offence. James became a one man wrecking crew. If Wilder isn’t on the field in the East final there is no way Toronto keep the score close. Then Wilder is the one to put the nail into the Riders chances and takes the Argos to the GC. His play in the GC is a major factor in why Toronto pulls it out.
So if Wilder truly wants to be reasonable with Toronto. As neither of these Dudes would get a chance anywhere else if not for TO. Then James Wilder should allow his agent to renegotiate with Popp and get a few more bucks to pay the bills. Then next year Wilder can do what ever he wants.
Victor Butler if you sit out and don’t play. Come 2019 you will no longer be relevant. So think this one over. I’d hate like hell to see talent as good as yours go to the way side. Play 1 more year. This year being your sophomore year you should be able to be monstrous.

It’s called Consideration or Quid pro quo (Sonethibg for something). The sensible thing would be an agreement to let him out of his option Year if he promised to return to Toronto if he got released.
But apparently that’s not the way it works.
A similar flaw of the system is if a draft pick gets cut, he’s free to sign with any team. Of course in the NHL, not too many draft picks make it right away. They are able to be returned to juniors for TWO additional years, then they can be sent to the minors for two more years after that without having to release them.
Even if CIS programs can be five years, and most players who are lower draft picks voluntarily go back and stay in that team’s future plans, the players could go to another interested teamif they choose to. An example of that was Ese Mrabure-Ajufo, Who was a first round pick for B.C.. They didn’t think he was ready and asked him to be on the Practice roster, but said no. The Saskatchewan Roughriders promptly picked him up.
There definitely needs to be some changes to the system. Hopefully they can do so before the 2018 season.

Wilder knowingly signed a 2 year contract. Money he agreed to isn't great and that is why the CFL practice schedule allows for the players to have Jobs outside football if they wish to. He can work a little harder like the rest of us or he can sit out and blow what should be a solid development year. Time for James to put on his big boy pants.

How do we know what was told behind closed doors. We do know what is signed. Everyone always goes after the one with the piece of signed paper saying they are so bad. For all anyone knows that the player is doing false statement and is simply trying to use public to get out of something he legally signed because the grass is greener on the other side. It would be refreshing for a player to thank the team for giving him an opportunity to showcase and display his talents and abilities, honour what he signed his name to and play.

It is illegal to make a deal where if Wilder does not make the NFL, he has to come back to Toronto. If he is released, he is a free agent. Wally got fined for doing just that last year. That kind of deal is not an option under present rules.
