One thing with the American players is bonuses are treated better tax wise for them. So this is a bonus for them as they aren’t paid all that much to begin with.

In my opinion .. Any/all promissed money and bonuses should be paid. Cfl has a responsibility and reputation to uphold.

Contracts between any employee and employer must be honored. Thats the Spirit of the Contract. CFL bonuses owed to players does not appear to follow this norm. Disgraceful behavior. In fact, CFL players appear to be held hostage by owners: i.e.if you want to play here our rules and only our rules will be followed. Man, the new CBA is already in trouble. We all thought the Manzeil saga was out of control, whew.

What would be interesting is the stats over the last 10 years as to how many post season bonuses GMs and teams have agreed to have ever been paid.

Yes, there’s the Durant scenario where he was so bad last year that he got the hook so that sort of off season bonus non-payment by cutting him earlier might seem more justifiable.

But I’m thinking more along the lines of things like the Lions cutting starter SB Jason Clermont some years back when he would have been a starter had they not cut him. Fans in those days would always say “Wally knows best” and how great he was at cutting a player before his skills declined – and Clermont was no exception.

When they can’t catch on another team and end out of football or go to a new team and it doesn’t work out, these same fans would say “Well, Wally knows best” .

I wonder how many of these off season bonus deals are signed by GMs in good faith or do they have their fingers crossed in case they want to turf the guy at year end.

In reply to CFL lover. No dumb is putting it in the agreement. The PA(OL Mafia )agreed to this in 14! Yes agreed to forgo bonuses until a new deal was agreed to. They thought because 1 of their own was now the commish they could get it thrown out! the Canadians do not care about the US brethren they only care about themselves!

This is about as dumb as it comes in terms of creating a cooperative negotiating atmosphere. It’s all about ownership flexing its muscles and trying to get the upper hand. Either the Commissioner was forced to go along or he’s not quite the player friend he claims to be. The CFL gets a break since McMahon’s league is only starting up in 2020 but naive to think players and their agents aren’t going to be carefully scrutinizing what’s going on over at the XFL. So dumb !
